Few shows evoke a more positive response, and have managed more recognition,
than This American Life. Today, the once boutique show has not only become a
mainstay of public radio but has also cemented its position, and has reached an
incredibly large audience, in the modern podcast format. This American Life was
something special from the beginning, as this package of early moments from the
first twenty-five shows indicates.

This American Life is a production of WBEZ Chicago, Chicago Public Radio, and
Public Radio International. It is hosted by Ira Glass. This episode starred Scott
Carrier, Jack Hit, Sandra Tsing Loh, David Sedaris, Rennie Sparks, and Sarah Thure.
The closing song is Memories Are Made of This by Dean Martin. Additional music
came from the Kings of Jazz compilation album.

Ira Glass

Ira Glass entered public radio in the mid-80s as an intern. He filed stories for
Morning Edition and AH Things Considered, before hosting The Wild Room from
1 990 to 1 995. In late 1 995, radio producer Torey Malatia asked Glass to produce a
new weekly variety show. Glass accepted and launched Your Radio Playhouse,
which was soon rebranded This American Life.
